In Visies voor het veld, Etcetera asks key figures for their perspectives on the performing arts of tomorrow. What is going well, and what urgently needs to change? What would they do if, tomorrow, they were an all-powerful Minister of Culture, with unlimited resources and powers? This week: choreographer, performer and dramaturge Carolina Mendonça proposes to reconsider spaces of experimentation as a political necessity – to speculate, play and fail, to prepare our bodies for what cannot be imagined yet.

Aggressively Modern Times – Ferre Marnef

Het clowneske geluid van de productiviteit

In Aggressively Modern Times heeft Ferre Marnef een aantal performers verzameld, met erg uiteenlopende achtergronden, en samen hebben ze gekeken naar Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Brothers en andere vintage comedy (en ook veel andere dingen, vermoedelijk). Dat levert, na amper een maand maken en repeteren een hilarisch ‘performatief concert’ op, dat, bij elk nummer begint met one-two-three-four en afsluit met thank you. Is dit nu neo-dada of bijtende satire? Onnozel of vindingrijk? Toneel of muziek? Alles tegelijk en niets van dat alles, maar vooral grappig en to the point. Een theatrale versie van Captain Beafheart, of zoiets. Zonder meer rock’n’roll. You are a great audience!

This resting, patience – Ewa Dziarnowska

Een choreografische verlangensmachine

This resting, patience, de drie uur durende dansinstallatie van de Poolse, in Berlijn werkende choreografe Ewa Dziarnowska, verveelt geen moment. De voorstelling neemt je mee in een voortdurend veranderend spel van fysieke aan- en afwezigheid, van nabijheid en afstandelijkheid tot de twee performers. Daardoor ontstaat tussen hen en het publiek een bijzondere intieme relatie, die de live gecreëerde soundscape verhevigt.

YOU CANNOT CAN – Dana Michel

Ambient insecurity

In You Cannot Can, Dana Michel steps onto the slippery floor of a public pool in the centre of Brussels to question all the manoeuvres one performs in life in order to swim in it. Masterfully, Michel (a marketing executive turned football player turned performer) makes herself infinitely disarming, un-intimidating, small and, at the same time, envelops us in her shine to reveal and loosen the ever-present ambient insecurity of today’s interactions.

Pablo Neruda once described Central America as the “soft waist of America”, a fertile region that has always been defined and dominated by the north. With Centroamérica, the Mexican collective Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol attempts to capture the pain of this exploited region with their distinctive documentary style. They once believed fervently in the power of theatre, but after a journey through seven countries plagued by moral murkiness, they are no longer so sure. Can theatre save the world?

Iedereen liegt

Pablo Neruda beschreef Centraal-Amerika ooit als de “zachte middel van Amerika”, een vruchtbare streek die altijd door het noorden is beschreven en bezeten. Met Centroamérica probeert het Mexicaanse collectief Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol de pijn van die uitgebuite regio te vatten in hun eigenzinnige documentaire stijl. Ooit geloofden ze vurig in de kracht van het theater, maar na een trip door zeven landen vol morele troebelheid zijn ze er niet meer zo zeker van. Kan het theater de wereld redden?

In Visies voor het veld vraagt Etcetera aan sleutelfiguren naar hun perspectief op de podiumkunsten van morgen, in aanloop naar de aanvraag voor werkingsmiddelen in december 2026.
