Over Nocturnes for a Society

In mei ging Nocturnes for a Society van Myriam Van Imschoot en Lucas van Haesbrouck in première tijdens het Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Een tachtigtal mensen verzamelde toen kort voor zonsondergang in een vrijstaand gebouw aan de oever van het Brusselse kanaal, om er deel te nemen aan een geluidsperformance die een half etmaal later eindigde, kort na zonsopgang aan de overkant van het water. Een groot deel van die tijd kon het publiek slapend doorbrengen. Hoe was deze mooie, ingetogen nocturne precies gecomponeerd in tijd en ruimte? En welke maatschappelijke verbeelding riep ze op?

God is alive, magic is afoot

South African performance artist, writer and cultural worker Kopano Maroga interrogates the intersections of God, magic and art. They discuss their involvement in Alesandra Seutin’s Mimi’s Shebeen, focussing on the magical techniques employed in the process of creating the work. They then reflect upon theurgy, a branch of magic, as it applies to Amanda Piña’s performance piece EXÓTICA. They conclude with reflections on their work as a dramaturge on Carolina Maciel de França’s The Hero’s Journey of Anastácia and the archetype of The Trickster, a mischievous deity who can move between the mortal world and and the immortal.

‘De wereld is aan het uitdoven’

Barok, thealogie en theatraliteit bij Krapp

‘Ik snap er niets, écht niets van, maar het was wel fantastisch’, hoorde Klaas Tindemans iemand zeggen na Through the Looking-Glass (and what we found there) van theatercollectief Krapp. Hij kon hem geen ongelijk geven. Dit stuk, zéér vrij naar Lewis Carroll, stort de onvoorbereide toeschouwer in een wereld achter de wereld, bewoond door drie bastardi die zelf niet weten waar ze zich bevinden. Een wereld vol hilarische cybertaal, vol vintage en state of the art technologie, waarin ze een identiteit proberen te construeren. En waarin ze flirten met de dood, alhoewel dat ‘concept’ hen niet geheel duidelijk is. Tot de printer, die het script van hun korte leven op de scène heeft uitgebraakt, stilvalt. Onbegrijpelijk, maar fantastisch.

‘We have to bring awareness about the consequences of our habits here and now.’

The Lives of Saints

Submission Submission is a longer-term research, publishing, and performance project about the subversive corporal, literary, and performative strategies of medieval women saints. Here, artist Bryana Fritz opts for hagiography over historiography. Hagiography, one of the most popular literary genres in the medieval period, is the writing of saints’ lives. The aim of this project is to make a codex, or a compilation of portraits (both performative and written), in which Fritz participates in the narration of their lives.
